When I started making these collages I was chasing a feeling or desire to make images that gave my an “all over feeling.” Meaning that I would want to come back and stay with the finished image for as long as I could. The piece would still very much be a Frankenstein-like creation, but the work would be a whole much greater then it’s parts. I think I had made over 50 collages before I finally started getting the feeling I was hoping to discover and this piece was the first time that I truly felt satisfied with the results, not that I had not enjoyed my fished work before this, but this piece in particular really made me love the work and the time I was putting in.
Like with most of my collages the longest part was the set-up step, where I am playing with which images work well together, but once the pair of images found each other it was a classic example of seeing the finished work come together before your eyes.
I always want my work, be it collage or drawing or anything else, to install that feeling of something basic and powerful, or something once known but maybe memory has fogged over a bit. I want to chase that feeling of nostalgia, longing, and having the right word just on the tip of your tongue.
As I keep writing these entries and posting to this site I hope to better hone in on what I am going after with this work. But take this image as example #1 of what I hope to accomplish.
